Shift to ernsheong.wordpress
Hi all! I initially wanted to have two blogs: one for outside events and another for my inner musings. But it is a pain trying to keep up with both. Inevitably, one is updated more frequently than the other. So please visit ernsheong.wordpress.com to go to my sole blog.
This blog will thus be officially closed.

OBAMA IS MY CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT! "Yes, we can!"
Yes, yes. I am a Malaysian. So what. I would vote for Obama if I were an American. NO questions asked.
Firstly, Obama is a great orator. Just listen to him speak, and you can't help but feel inspired and lifted. He is a man who perhaps has not proven track record, but nevertheless so did Abraham Lincoln, who is regarded as the finest President America ever had. What the world needs now is a President who can change things for the better and unite the people.
Secondly, I believe that Obama is a man of integrity and is running for the Presidency not as a matter of personal ambition but for the benefit of America and its people. Obama is the man of my choice and I believe that he will prevail over the next caucuses despite a slight loss to Hillary in New Hampshire. He did it in Iowa, he can do it in America. The world really needs a President who believes in humanity, not war, as Obama does. As Obama says it,"Yes, We Can!"
Even when Hillary led in the many months before the primaries, I supported Obama. He gives me confidence, no matter how falsely placed it might be. To me, Hillary is old-school, and for a youngster like me, Obama speaks volumes of hope to the world. I have faith that Obama will pull through and become the first African American President of the United States.
May God let the best candidate win!

The Malaysian Brain Drain
I went back to Malacca recently (my hometown) and made an observation I wasn't aware of until now.
One cousin of mine is now already a Singaporean (she took up a scholarship which requires her to be a Singaporean). Another cousin of mine is going to work in Singapore or Australia. I have another two cousins who are already Australian PRs. Opps, make that three, another cousin of mine who is now in Malaysia is also a PR holder who has plans to reside in Australia in the future.
Large scale uprooting.
This is only my family. Among friends, the number of fingers that I have is not enough to count those who have already left for "greener pastures."
What is happening to Malaysia now? Where will I be? This world is becoming so globalized. People go wherever they want. Is migration a bad thing? I don't have the answers, but I just want to trust Him and acknowledge Him in all that I do.
With that, I can never go wrong.

I want a Mac badly
My next laptop would definitely be a Mac.

If I ever go to the US, this could be the Macbook Pro that I will buy. Expensive but loving it! Dreaming about it! (The price is quoted in US Dollars)
Oh no, wait... I also need to get software for the Macbook Pro... which means more dollars. Might have to downgrade from the above ideal configuration to save up money for other software. Plus printer? Sigh. Money money money...

So are you coming back to Singapore?
This was the most common question people ask me during the past few weeks. Others were, "Won't you miss us?" or "Where are you going to study? Why not in Singapore uni?"
Dilemma at the crossroads, as usual.
The fact is that I don't know.
It all depends on the following scenarios:
1) God opens a door for me to go to the US to study by enabling me to obtain an admission offer from one of the universities listed in my previous post AND a financial aid package that allows me to pay for the immense costs of studying there. I will study in NUS if all the universities I apply to reject me.
2) If I obtain an admission offer but do not receive any financial aid (for universities like Stanford do not offer need-blind financial aid) I will have to make the decision of either studying in NUS or paying RM 800,000 for a US education without any scholarship, loan or grant. Another question is, "Is it worth it paying that sum for an 'elite' education in a US Uni when I can get it at a fraction of the fee in NUS?" My mum would have to bear the load of the cost at the expense of a few properties perhaps. (sell them off)
My stand: NO scholarships please. I hate bonds.
My answer to the above question:
1) Yes, if I am studying in NUS next time given the above scenarios.
2) Yes, I intend to work in Singapore but this is just a desire. Life may lead me somewhere else. So if I go to the US I may be coming back to Singapore after I get my paper qualifications.
3) Why not Malaysia? Opps... I really don't know.
Thank you Zhong Liang for the card you gave me the other day and I will quote it: "...it's the hands of the Lord that leads and guide us on."
Yes indeed. My definite answer to the question "What's next?" is: "Wherever the Lord leads me to." He has the best plans for me and yes, anyone who believes in Him."

US University Application Final List?
After long discussion and debate with my mum, we have come to a list of five universities which I would apply to:
1) Stanford University (already applied, notification on Dec 15th)
2) University of Berkeley (already applied)
3) MIT
4) Cornell
5) Princeton (my mum was intent on this university, although I felt that it's engineering department was not too solid compared to the rest above)
6) University of Pennsylvania? (I might add this in)
The list might not end here, but at least for now, it is this. No safeties, but if God really wants me to attend any of the above, He would help me to enter no matter hard it is to gain admission.
